Right after he was elected, ten states from the south tried to leave the United States. The Civil War tore the country apart. In the beginning, the Union army didn’t do very well. However, the extreme parts of the north and the south did not like his attitude. He believed that slavery was bad, but the constitution allowed it. He thought that if he was nice to the people in the north and the south, then the troubles would go away.

One of the most important cases involved the Dred Scott decision in 1857. It said that restricting slavery was not legal. This caused the slavery issue to explode. They said that even though Dred Scott lived in a free state, he needed to go back to his master. They said he belonged to another person and had no right to sue or be a citizen.

Buchanan tried hard to keep the peace, but by the end of his presidency, the first shots of the Civil War started. The south wanted to start their own country and leave the United States.
