Creative Writing

Due April 26

Discussion: Today we will write about our most prized possession. What is the one thing that you prize over all the other objects in your life?

Maybe it is your high school diploma. Maybe it is a toy that someone very special gave you. Maybe it is a book that taught you how to be you.

Write about you most prized possession and how you got it. Write about why it is so valuable to you.

For example, my most prized possession is my sewing machine. I love that I can be creative and make things using the sewing machine. I am so happy when I can mend clothes or make curtains. I have been sewing since I was a small child so I really enjoy sewing. I always hope to have a sewing machine.

    Due April 5
  1. Write about your favorite childhood memory. Maybe it was a small thing like your mother cuddling with you. Maybe it was a big trip to a new place. Tell about how you felt and why this was a great memory.

For example, my favorite childhood memory was on Christmas Eve. My mother rented out my bedroom to make some money and my sister and I were lucky enough to sleep by the Christmas Tree. We were sure we could stay awake until Santa came. That never happened, but the excitement and anticipation were amazing.

2.

Write about a time when you helped someone else.

News for You often includes stories about people going out of their way to help others. Have you done something kind or helpful for a stranger or a group of strangers recently? Has a stranger helped you in an unexpected way? Tell us your inspirational stories.

On May 10, News for You will publish some readers’ writing on this topic. If you would like to have your writing considered, email it to nfyeditor@proliteracy.org. Please limit each response to 200 words. Writing will be edited for space and grammar. Responses must be received by March 29. Be sure to include your full name, city, and state.

Due Mar 15

1. We are now adults with adult lives, but I am a child at heart. I love toys. For this quiz, think about a toy that was your favorite toy. Maybe it was a favorite when you were a child, maybe it is your favorite now. Since COVID happened, adults are buying LEGO sets and putting them together. People play all sorts of games on their phones.

For example, my grandmother never had toys. She had a difficult life so on her seventieth birthday we bought her a doll. That is all she wanted. That doll sat on her bed for the rest of her life. I don’t think she played with it, but it meant a lot to her. Before the doll, she felt like she had missed out on part of life. Once she had the doll, she could move on. We were so happy to buy her that doll.

What is a toy that was your favorite? Why was it important to you?

How did you get the toy? Did you have to wait for a long time? Did you actual get the toy or…?

Did you play with the toy? Did you share it with others?

Why was this toy important to you?

2. Think about all the dreams you have. If you could have one of them come true, what would it be. Why would that dream be useful. Why do you want it to come true?

For example,

I have a dream to see all the states. For Australia, I only have one state left. I would love to go to Tasmania. My husband wants to see the Northern Lights, but from Tasmania, we could try to see the Southern Lights. I think that would be amazing.

Due March 8:

If you could eat just one food, every day for a month, and nothing else…what would it be?

Talk about why. Talk about what you wouldn’t choose. Talk about how food makes you feel.

For example, I would eat soup. First, I like soup. Second, once you make it, it is easy to prepare. Third, it tastes a bit different every day. At the end of the month, I would definitely eat something else.
